I've driven in US, Canada, Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and China.
Usually I rent local cars. In the last few years the US cars are not bad. Last Summer I rented a Buick for 3 weeks and feels OK. The new Australian cars are good too. Last time I rented a Cougar and the V6 was very refine.
The best experience in terms of driving I have was in Europe 2 years ago. I rented an Alfa 156 1.9 td, which was a very good car if you don't mind shifting a lot, as the redline was around 5,000 rpm.
NZ is actually very good for 自駕遊 too. The roads are good and traffic is light. Round the 2 Islands takes about 10 days to 2 weeks.
I think one very good 自駕遊 route is in the US. You can start in San Francisco, go north east to Yellow Stone Park (visit Redwood Forest and Crater Lake on the way), enter from the West gate and exit through the South Gate, which will take you to Grand Teton Park. Go South through Zion Park to Grand Canyon. Then head West to Las Vegas and then LA. Takes about 3 weeks.
