Sorry, I do not get which part was funny.
What I mean is, user pays almost same for a new set top box to fit their needs as 10 years ago, and there is nothing wrong for manufacturer to sell them as same price.
of coz one can go Ap Liu street and buy a second hand Magic TV and it work "almost" the same as the new ones at much cheaper cost (I personally do that, most of my MTVs are second hand repaired, I only ever paid for a couple first hand ones from Broadway).
The $1xxx not only comes with the HW, but the software that comes with it, the warranty (which some user already mention they were not very good).
Yes HW price dropped, MTV did improved their chipsets and tuners, not significant but they did (menu are faster with faster CPU, tuner were more stable), they learnt their lessons and changed the PSU/Remote sources, they provided update firmware to bug fix, support new function to their products (HKTV support, MHEG5 support) (which tho, I think they can do better on their firmware, look at the hacking MagicTV post).
MTV did sell something improved other than same HW 10 years back, like Apple was selling an Apple II 30 years back and Mac mini now at almost same price.
All I was trying to point out is, things don't fall down from the sky, try to appreciate what engineer make and it is not an easy job.
Someone thinks a $1xxx set top box is very expensive, someone else thinks it is fair, someone go for second hand $2xx ones which still works well, there is no right or wrong.
The fact is, user pay for what they think is worth and they are still buying it, the need and demand is still there (given almost ALL newer TV comes with basic recording functions), no doubt MTV did a great job and some user would still like to pay for.
I do not work at /for MTV, but I appreciate their local development, and I do enjoy their UX of the product. |
