Because the default server in Hong Kong is very very slow.

From menu bar:
System > Administration > Software Source
In the 1st tab of Software Sources,
There is a box of 'Download from'
use the mouse to select the down arrow, and then select 'other',
Ubuntu will then prompt you to select the best server available to you.

In my case, it is now set to
http://ftp.hostrino.com/pub/ubuntu/archive

相信跟伺服器有關，你可以到「系統->管理->軟件來源->下載自」選擇較快的伺服器，上面提到的便是香港伺服器的連結

I am not using Ubuntu (I am a Debian user), and I usually choose the mirror at US or Japan, they are amazingly faster than that in HK.

  I don't even know that you are using Debian.

I always use twaren for all distro (usually 1MB/s). What is the speed of your mirror?

I am using the US mirror. Mirror at HK is not that stable, I think.

I use Taiwan mirror.

For the speed, I mean the transfer rate for downloading the package (apt-get install). (apt-get update) for testing branch uses rred which depends mostly on the CPU power.

仲有如果你用繁體ubuntu基本上一開始你揀台灣就會小好多問題.(不要揀香港...)...

Debian 台灣 D mirror sites 快好多 +1

我淨係知 ftp.hk.debian.org 放o左o係低一線 DC, 仲 limit o左 bandwidth, 相對黎講台灣 mirrors 放o係大學入面 bandwidth 梗係勁好多 不過 ftp.tw.debian.org 有時假期學校整電會熄o左 :funk: 所以我都用 twaren.net 多
