Problem with Ubuntu 8.10 on old notebook

Hi, I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my old notebook. but i got a problem with the display, when I boot into ubuntu, it shows a black screen, but when i input my username and password, it shows to boot up sound/music, which means the OS is installed correctly... I tried reinstalling, but it's the same thing everytime.
the notebook boot up fine in xp, ubuntu 8.04, and the 8.10 live cd, so the display has no problem.

i'm suspecting it's a problem with the default video driver in 8.10, but does anyone know is there a way to fix that? i have problems with 8.04's wifi driver, that's why i want to upgrade to 8.10...

thanks in advance.

You may try sudo dpkg-reconfigure xorg to use another driver. In the past, you can open /etc/X11/xorg.conf to edit the X configurations directly, but I heard it has been removed.

Perhaps you want to install display driver from nVidia/ AMD-ATI too.

咁可能係Load display driver果陣有問題,所以你要Config.返用返啱既Display driver,自己另外裝又好,用X.Org內置的又好。

又有可能係Display setting問題,例如Resolution...

err... how to change the default resolution by using boot menu commands?

ok, after some googling. i found ppl suggesting to add vga=791 at the grub boot menu.
