unable to update Windows 7 --- please help

Have been connected to internet to update Windows.  The Windows Update Dialogue Box has been showing downloading 42 dates (0KB total, 0% complete) in the past 30 minutes, which means actually there is no downloading.  Why?  What can I do?
Please help.
