Windows 8.1 falls under the same lifecycle policy as Windows 8, and will reach end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023.

    Thank you for your information, recently I and some other W 8.1 users have experienced difficulties in
receiving Windows 8.1 updates, When checked for updates, the green Checking for Updates bar kept  running, but no updates were received.

Yesterday I reinstalled W 8. 1, usually when Windows is freshly installed, there are lots of updates coming in , but I received none.

This explains why someone on the internet suggests to run the Checking for Updates for hours, while others suggest to manually install updates which will search for updates for the system, I tried 2, but all failed, even let them running for hours.

This issue only occurs in some devices, I think some critical updates which classified as Recommended might be omitted from the system for some device owner choose only Important Updates to install.

I eventually kicked off the problem by installing Windows 10 in the 1.5 years old laptop, it is my third device with W 10.

Fortunately the system has been upgraded to W 10 once during the free upgrade period, no product key is required, otherwise … .

I would like to suggest that anyone encountered the same issue, simply jump ship to W 10, W 10 runs well even on my other 8 years old laptop.

you need start your PC totally disconnected from internet (to avoid Windows Update service connect to Microsoft Servers) and then install this updates manally....

KB3173424 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3173424 (pre-requisite).
KB3172614 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172614 (contains the last Windows Update client for now).

once both updates are installed, you can connect to internet again, and Windows Update should start to works normally again.

  I reinstalled W 8.1 in my laptop, and installed the 2 updates.

My laptop started to receive updates.
