NVIDIA SHIELD Experience Day 2014

Hi, my name is Wayne and I am a gamer.
It was my first ever Nvidia experience day. First of all, I would like to thank HKEPC and Nvidia for arranging the event. It was both informative and fun. It is nice to see Nvidia show us Hong Kong gamers some love and care. I have always been a Nvidia fanboy obviously because of my gaming back ground. Their GPUs are must get when it comes to hardcore PC gaming. My first Nvidia card was the GeForce FX 5900, followed by GeForce 7800, GeForce 9800 GTX, GTX 285 x 2(sli) and today GTX780.

I applied for the 1:30pm - 3:30pm session. There were about 25-30 people and the session started at 2pm.
Walked into the room and right in front of my face was a Nvida powered PC mounted on a test-bench. Next to it was a giant flat screen TV with Shield related videos playing. I thought to myself "This is gonna be cool!" Hey! I was right! An Nvidia director/speaker came and gave us a very in-depth introduction of the famous Nvidia Shield. Now, before I attended the event I did not do much research on it, I thought the Shield was just an handheld gaming device that could run some games. Turns out I was wrong! There is just so much more that the Shield can do, I was stunned!

Nivdia Shield has an Andriod OS built in which is already awesome because the machine allows you to map keys to play any Android games. So I thought to myself  "Is this an Android with a controller and screen?" Turns out I was wrong again, there is more!

The speaker flipped his power-point slides and the title was "PC Game Streaming". Oh man, just the title itself sold me. The Nvidia Shield allows user to game while using their PC as the server. Therefore the Shield is only processing what the PC is giving it. What a great idea! Why? Well, this just means the shield will never get old! The gaming experience is only limited to what you are putting inside your tower. If you are not able to play future games because your GPU cant handle it, simply upgrade your GPU to the newest Nvidia cards and your shield is then also upgraded! By that time, I thought these were all the greatness Nvidia Shield are packed with and I was ready to go buy one. You know what? I was wrong again.....

The speaker then introduced us the GRID. Grid is a software and hardware integration which allow Shield owners to play games streaming directly from the Nvidia cloud server. Insane right? All you got to do is hook up to a stable wifi connection and you can start. You don't even have to install the games, contents are streaming to you like Youtube videos in HD quality. You might be worrying about the same issue that I was, latency. Nvidia is achieving an amazing 30 ms reduction with the NVIDIA GRID platform. The result would be like playing on local console.

Yes, I am still writing because the introduction was still going, which means there is still more the shield can do! Now, let say you have an HD TV in your living room, a Bluetooth controller and a Shield in your hand. What can you do with all these to game? You can connect your shield to the HD TV via HDMI then connect your Bluetooth controller to your shield and BAM! you can game on your HD TV using your shield as a console. What a beast! The speaker effortlessly demo this feature with a graphic intensive game "Batman Arkham Origins" and there were no signs of issues at all.

Ok...I am done talking about gaming because it is NOT the only thing that the Shield could do. The speaker told us that the Shield could play 4K movies....I did not believe that until it was proved right in front of my eyes. 4K movies are pretty much the best you can ask for nowadays!
Wait, what about music..?  Come on...it plays 4K movies, of course it plays music!!!

The speaker showed us what the Shield can do and its only fair if we get to try it out! The experience was then moved to a bigger room while we spit into groups of 3-4 . One shield was then handed to each group to mess with. What can I say, the introduction sounded so good and I had such good hope for the real thing. Well! It was just more than what I was told. The machine fit nice and snug in my hand with a rubber finish. The buttons are ergonomically well placed to ensure you can game as long as your want without getting sore. The screen is giving my eyes so much goodness I could not look away. The speakers are blasting good quality game sound in my ears to enrich the experience. So basically, the machine was giving me everything I wanted when gaming.

I didn't want to put it down when I heard one of the HKEPC staff said a racing game competition will determined who wins a brand new Shield. Every team must compete on the same track with the same grade of cars. We all had 45mins to play and the team with the best time will play against each other, then finally the winner gets it. The game was an Android racing game, similar to slots car.

While competing, I heard teams yelling out their best time @ 1m44s while ours was 1m48s. We kept trying and trying and 45mins very soon passed. OH! the winner was US!! Team A5!! We had the best time @ 1m39s! Us 3 then immediately played against each other and the result...............I won! Best day of 2014!!! Wow, I could not believe I won!!! My teammates also got a Nvidia power bank for being 2nd and 3rd!  =)  I really love the idea of competing with the shield to win, after all the machine was built for gamers. I love it.

Overall the 2014 Nvidia Experience Day was well arranged and entertaining, not to mention the informative speak and enjoyable competition. As the speaker demo Shield's features, he continues to surprise me, each points he made just makes me wanted the Shield MORE and MORE. Honest speaking, if I did not win the Shield, the event would still be awesome and I would ended up going to buy myself one. I cannot wait for the next Nvidia event and I will for sure attend again. Cheers!
THANK YOU HKEPC AND NVIDIA!

Have a nice day!

Hi Wayne, nice article.  May I ask who is the Shield's built-in speaker?  Good enough?  Or do you prefer plugging in the headphone?

    Hi,
I think the speakers are alright when you are playing in a fairly quite room. If you are a playing in the streets and crowed places, I recommend bluetooth headphones, you dont want the wires to get in the way!
