Yes, Apple staff can search the invoice based on the credit card info. In fact, they can search it with your iPhone serial too. Just the matter if they are willing to do it.

Any Apple store is ok (If return less than 10 iPhones), sometimes they check, sometimes don't... Depends on the staff....

May I ask which store you returned to and how long does the return process take? Did they just check the serial or if they need to check it for an hour?
