I am going to diy the temperature control cooling fan system based on the circuit below with some modification.
Posted on Everyday Practical Electronics, August 2008.
Test the circuit on a breadboard first.
Try to place all the components onto a graph paper.
To see connections are possible or not, minimize the jumper wires.
(Components Side)
Copper tracks that need to be cut, breaking the connections.
(Soldering Side)
Cut out appropriate size of stripboard.
Using the handheld drill to break the tracks connection.
The PCB is now ready for soldering.
More photos and details will be posted later.

that mean u use the fan to displace the coil of relay??

'displace'?
I directly REplace the coil of relay with a cooling fan.

did you want the fan to switch when temp. is hot enough, and switch off when temp. drop to some level? If you does, will the circuit a little bit complicated? Try to search something called "schmitt trigger", it should be more simple.
Have you ever think about change the fan speed instead of switch if off? I have done one on my home server.
BTW, where you found the stripboard? I have search it for long time but cannot found it. Can you tell me where you bought it?

No need to diy, you can buy a cooling fan that has a thermistor built inside.
The speed of the cooling fan is proportional to the temperature, i am using this one in my circuit.
I think this circuit is not complicated, it can be used in both switch on/off purpose.
1. switch on when temperature is high enough
or
2. switch on when termperature is low
And the the temperature and hysteresis can be adjusted easily, low cost thermistor is used.
The pcb can be found in Max (Hung Kwong Shopping Arcade,Tung Choi St.)

I had built this circuit long time ago to control the speed of 4 motors with diffenent speed. It is still working properly.
The main disadvantage of the circuit is high frequency noise.

where is the noise come from? the Fan ?
作者: tnovicet 時間: 2009-8-17 10:51 標題: 回覆 24# 的帖子
Yes, different speed -> different sound
作者: avdaemon 時間: 2009-8-17 14:28

I tested this circuit also have noise <50% d.
after paralleled a 100uF to the Fan which smooth out the pulse, there is no noise now

I know there is product in the market with thermal-speed control, but you can never control the target temp.

I am saying that in my configuration, the cooling fan is switched on when the temperature is high enough while the speed of it is proportional to the temperature, i do not control the speed of the cooling fan.
