買左約一年,小用
話説抄幾百G ,開始好快，一陣只得返幾十k ,仲要見到讀寫錯誤

諗諗吓好彩的話可能只係唔夠電，換條usb線再第部機的usb 3.0/3.1 port可能有得救資料，救到幾多得幾多啦

呢嘀係HDD的死症，記錄DATA的磁區會随時間慢慢消磁弱化，擺耐左就會變成弱化區，OS經過幾次嘗試讀取唔成功後就會將該磁區標籤成bad sector, 并且呢個問題唔係長期通電就可以解決的，長期運作的HDD都會有呢個問題，必須定期徹底重寫DATA，做法係要將嘀DATA抄到另一個HDD，刪除原有的DATA或者格式化後再重新抄返。比SSD的長時間唔通電丟失DATA更加麻煩，因為SSD只須定期通一通電幾秒鐘就保存到。

Seagate and WD portable hdds are not durable (mainly talking about the USB controller)

I've been using the Seagate backup plus 4TB portable (SMR) for more than 2 years.  As time goes by (after numerous write operations), its performance degrades.  However, there is a way to refresh the hdd.

- Read/write speed (USB 3.0) on day 1 was about 14x/13x MB/s
- It's being used for scheduled daily backup (update mode, with add/change/delete operations)
- After a few months, the write speed reduced to 9x MB/s
- Quick format the hdd, read/write speed was back to 14x/13x MB/s

A quick format (in less than 10 secs) is good enough to refresh it!  I did that once every 6 months (about).

While the Seagate USB controller was bad (died prematurely), the ST4000LM024 4TB SMR is good (so far).  It works fine after putting into UNITEK Y-3363

Due to data sensitivity issue, I did not proceed RMA when my Seagate backup plus 4TB's USB controller dies in about 2 years of use (it has 3 years of warranty!).  The only way was to dismantle the unit and relocate the hdd into another 2.5" USB box.

raid scrubbing   may help ?
it read and scan through the raid , if error happen it can calculate and write a correct block on it

Sure it would work fine .  And SMR is perfect for backup purpose.  Not to mention, there is a way to refresh it

New SMR disks have TRIM just like a SSD, this kind of SMR HDDs don't need to refresh to gain back performance.

I did not use Veracrypt coz I need that 2.5" 4TB to be very portable (can be read by any PC w/o the need of add-on software).  However, I did use Veracrypt to create encrypted vaults (on other disks) for specific needs.

About backup tools :
While fastcopy (freeware) is my favourite file copy tool (I rarely use freefilesync now), I'm using the non-free VIceVersaPro (https://www.tgrmn.com/) as the primary backup software.  One of the best features of VVP is the support of encryption by file level (in .enc).  

There are freeware backup tools that generate single encrypted ZIP backup file, which is basically non-usable when we are talking about a backup size of say 2TB (and we need to handle incremential or update modes) !  In contrast, VVP generates individual encrypted enc files, which is fast and effective.  Not much software in the market having such feature!

For 3.5" hdd, I will not buy "水貨".   I like Toshiba MG series coz it has 5 years of local warranty, "一換一" in case of any problem.  In addition, we can trade-in to higher model (paying a quite reasonable price diff) within warranty period.
